LAN #12 – Complete
LAN #12 was likely our most successful LAN to date with over 24 boxes on site all participating in some pretty fun LANing this Saturday past. Whilst some early on difficulties were had, we managed to have a great time. The (d)admin was suffering the flu which hurt organisation but otherwise it was a blast.
Whilst attendance was up, an early bug with the v1.5 patch for Battlefield 2 threatened to ruin things for the entire room. Luckily the patching process was stopped before too many installations was corrupted. The exact cause is still being investigated but there’s a lot of confidence that the culprit will be found so that v1.5 can be played at the next LAN.
Beyond the BF2 errors, network and power were fault free and drink sales were brisk.
The schedule once again creatively interpreted with CnC Generals being dumped from the play list due to time constraints. The console game turnout was also pretty small with Uriumaru saving the day once again with SF4 on the big screen. There should be a bigger showing next LAN I’m told.
DC++ share peaked at 9TB and our transfer module ceased responding after a total of 6.1tb was transferred. There were a few faces who hadn’t hashed. I again encourage them to pre-hash at home.
BattleField 2 (v1.4) was the first order of the day, with most of the room participating. Usual mode of Room VS Hard.Bot.Horde was met with outstanding human resistance, which led to calls of half room vs the other half. The mode was a exceeding challenging with most matches running for 20 minutes or more. Quite alot of fun and it will definitely be repeated. Shout-outs to MorgZ, Rev & Uruimaru for their commander skills.
TF2 followed with most attendees forgoign their usual handles and continuing to adpot the ’-bro’ monicker. Shout outs to ‘Broceidon – Lord of the Broceon’, ‘Brosama’ & ‘Brodouken’. We laughed, we cringed, we raged. Names aside DharkFox, G & Uriumaru were the players to beat, regardless of which side they were on.
WarCraft3 was next up, with divided response from the group. Despite its detractors it continues to be a well enjoyed game. DotA & CastleWars were played. Both games were played simultaneously with the overflow from DotA joining in for some fast and furious CW action. Game masters Blue & Skibblez schooled the rookies and their cries were bitter ones. SarilX and co, crumbled under the AI assault, 2-3, in the 5th and final round of competition in CW despite their best efforts.
Unreal3 followed WC3 and proved to be every bit the twitch shooter we expected. Kills and revenge were had in equal measure with pilots of the Alien Walker being… deposed, lightning quick. DharkFox was again the player to beat however as the first time as a prime-time game, players were expected to warm slowly to the games many charms.
GRID was up next and while performing fine the antics of certain players means we will have to refine our play style for subsequent LAN’s.
By about 5PM all available tables were maxed out with certain kind people offering to double up to accommodate their neighbours. A huge thanks to everyone even as temperatures soared in LAW131. The ‘No-box on table’ rule was mostly respected, except in extreme cases and you all have my gratitude.
We continue to encourage people to invite friends & family to the LAN’s to help us grow and continue to offer one of the friendliest LAN’s in Tasmania.
